Now that you’ve got your perfect tint, how can you keep it looking like new? Part of the appeal of window tint (at least, when installed aftermarket) is that it looks as though it came that way straight from the manufacturer. You can keep this effect, but you need to know how to care for it properly.
After installation, you should avoid cleaning your tint for at least 24 hours. Leaving your tint alone for a full 48 hours without opening or closing your windows (and without the tint getting dirty) is ideal. Though your tint will already be mostly set, you can still affect the tint’s adhesion to your window glass, which could lead to the tint starting to flake or peel off prematurely.
Your car should always be covered if it’s parked outside. Avoid parking in hot areas, such as directly under the sun. Ideally, your car should be parked in a covered garage. This is to protect the tint from sunlight, as it could prematurely age.
A car window with tint should only be cleaned with tint-safe window cleaners or with warm water. When cleaning tint, use a rag or paper towel and clean gently in circular motions. If you find any defects in the tint, such as bubbles, you can push them out with a flat object towards the edge of the glass. If there are scratches or nicks, you may want to get them repaired. You can use an ammonia-free glass cleaner to clean any streaks.
Pay attention to your windows when rolling them up or down, as anything that can catch the window could potentially scuff or scratch your tint. Your tint is likely to be on the inside of your window, which also means that people in the car could potentially damage it. Be particularly mindful of children and pets!
There are many types of tint including some that are intended to last a year or two to tints that are intended to last up to a decade. Getting a premium tint can go a long way to ensuring that you don’t have to replace it too fast and that it looks perfect for a long time to come.
