How to Extend the Life of Your Window Tint

How to Extend the Life of Your Window Tint

If you’re considering tinting the windows on your ride, one of the questions you might have is around the life span of the process. At Executive Motorsports, we spend a lot of time and energy on education as well as investing in the best possible tints for your vehicle. Window tinting has a variety of benefits for your vehicle: it can improve your resale value, keep your interior cooler and even prevent sun damage to your skin. While all window tinting will eventually break down, if you want to extend the life of your window films and stay cool inside your vehicle for years, keep reading!

Lasting Power

How long a particular tint lasts on your vehicle depends on a variety of factors, such as the type of tint that you select as well as how committed you are to maintenance. Inexpensive dyed window tints may last only a few years before they bubble, break down, crack or glaze. Once that happens, it’s only a matter of time before they start peeling off. This process occurs more quickly if the dyed film does not include a UV inhibitor within the polyester. However, a high-quality hybrid film can last up to five years and are often made of a mix of dyes and reflective minerals. Other films are made by using the sputtering or deposition technology within a vacuum chamber. This type of adhesion lasts up to a decade and is much more durable. Finally, films that utilize carbon or a ceramic tint may come with a lifetime warranty covering installation or product defects.

Stay Natural. Window tints, in general, are slightly delicate, meaning harsh chemicals may cause them to break down more quickly than expected. For windows that are only lightly streaked, mist some water onto the windows and wipe clean with a dry microfiber cloth.

Extending the Life of Your Tint

There are several things that you can do to keep your window tint looking good for years. While caring for your tinted windows doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming, you will need to exercise a little caution to ensure that you get the longest possible life from your tints. Here are three methods to keep in mind:

  1. Stay Natural. Window tints, in general, are slightly delicate, meaning harsh chemicals may cause them to break down more quickly than expected. For windows that are only lightly streaked, mist some water onto the windows and wipe clean with a dry microfiber cloth. Only use vertical strokes, and often check for dirt or contaminants on the cloth that might scratch the finish of the tint.
  2. Stay Away from Ammonia. If your windows have a significant amount of buildup, you might opt for a window cleaner instead of using water. Ammonia damages window tints over time and is so effective that many dealerships use ammonia to remove tints, so steer clear.
  3. When They’re Filthy. If you smoke in your car or have coolant residue or other tough dirt on your windows, you’ll need a multi-step process to get them sparkling. Start with a bucket of warm, soapy water and a soft sponge, and gently clean off the worst of the mess. Then follow up with ammonia-free glass cleaner to bring out the shine.
