Flood Damage To Your Car, Now What?

Flood Damage To Your Car, Now What?

What are the next steps after your car has been flooded? Flood damage is some of the worst when it comes to vehicles and it can be a significant loss. Even if you have insurance coverage, you may need to do a little work to make sure the situation is resolved in the most optimal way.

The Dangers of Flood Damage

Flooding causes a lot of lasting issues for a car. If a car is stuck in flood water, it can eventually lead to paint problems and rust, which can become severe. If the electronics are submerged, they may need to be entirely replaced. Interior upholstery may experience the growth of mold, which is going to need to be replaced. Essentially the cost of repair is almost always going to be significantly costly for the insurance company and those without insurance may find themselves better served by purchasing another vehicle.

Totaling a Car through Insurance

If a car is submerged for any lengthy amount of time or it is submerged up to the dashboard, it will often be considered a total loss. The insurance company will scrap the vehicle and provide the replacement cost of the vehicle less a deductible. If the insurance company considers the car scrapped, there is usually little you can do as the car will be reported as a total. However, it’s possible to get the vehicle back. A vehicle can be purchased back for a low amount from the insurance company after being totaled, or a fee can be paid to retain it. But because the car will be listed as totaled, it will be difficult to sell or insure.

If a car isn't totaled following a flood, an insurance claim will need to be made explaining the flooding event and including images of the damage. Most frequently the vehicle will need professional cleaning and possibly it will need replacement upholstery.

Repairing and Recovering from Flooding

If a car isn’t totaled following a flood, an insurance claim will need to be made explaining the flooding event and images of the damage should be included. Most frequently the vehicle will need professional cleaning and possibly it will need replacement upholstery. The vehicle may also need to have its paint job replaced because of scratches and dings from debris. It may also need to have dents fixed. It’s important to fix this quickly before the paint job gets worse and the frame becomes potentially damaged. An inspection will also be needed to determine whether there may be issues with the engine of the vehicle or any of its electronics.

With tremendous disasters such as those that recently occurred in Houston, Texas, it becomes even more important to get insurance. In dealing with surface damage and aesthetic repairs, Executive Motorsports may be able to help.
